Just heard a story on the radio about the University of Washington initiative "UW Common Book". All incoming freshman are reading "The Devil's Highway"...http://www.washington.edu/uaa/commonbook/..."challenges freshmen to examine important subjects and build community around significant issues".

Totally! I get all happy inside when I hear other people commenting on what they see fellow-riders reading, but I hesitate commenting myself. I don't know if that comes from my days of working at checkout and "respecting privacy," withholding comment. But I *would* feel more comfortable announcing what I'm reading, maybe even sharing a good passage as a read-aloud (yes, this has crossed my mind). We've done the "if all of the city" read the same book initiative; maybe it's time for "if all of the bus or bus stop read the same book.

I rode on the same plane as Nancy Pearl once and loved the way she walked the isles commenting on what people were reading. I wonder if people on our bus would become more engaged if they knew there was a librarian on board, available for readers advisory!
